Mastercraft Courser CXT Review

The Courser CXT from Mastercraft is a unique tire in many respects, delivering impressive traction and durability for commercial trucks.

PROS

  • Off-road traction
  • Very reasonably priced

CONS

  • On-road grip and handling
  • No mileage warranty

Typically, all-terrain tires offer five rows of tread lugs, looking to balance on- and off-road performance. Not here. The Courser CXT takes a more extreme approach with just four rows of treads, signifying just how much it’s designed to be used on vehicles that are primarily on work sites or other off-road areas. The big tread lugs are designed to dig in and give grip, while there’s no shortage of void space between the lugs to help toss-away dirt or other loose surfaces.

While it doesn’t have the center tread row most all-terrain tires have for delivering a more balanced on-road feel and heightened responsiveness, Mastercraft did design the tire for a larger on-road footprint to help combat that. Wet weather grip on-road is also optimized thanks to a silica-infused tread compound that is designed to hold up better in wet conditions.

Moving back to off-road performance, the shoulder tread blocks feature an alternating pattern to help the tire dig in further and provide added grip. Similarly, the design on the sidewall adds an extra layer of traction when the tire is in deep. It also, quite literally, provides an extra layer of rubber to protect the sidewall against damage and punctures.

Between each shoulder tread lug are small stone ejector ribs, which work to force out rocks trapped in the tread (which can lead to premature tire wear), while also helping self-clean the tire, tossing away packed-in mud and dirt.

And as a result of all these features, the Courser CXT actually look great too! Normally that’s not much of a concern for a commercial tire, but if you can get some style with all that functionality, why not?

While this tire isn’t certified for extreme winter use, it is studdable, meaning you can transform it into an incredibly capable tire in the snow.

If there are drawbacks to this tire, on-road grip and responsiveness in the dry aren’t great, but that’s not really what a tire like this is for. We’d also prefer to see a milage guarantee, but again, knowing the type of work this tire is designed for, we’re not surprised there isn’t one.

Mastercraft Courser CXT Price

Pricing for the Mastercraft Courser CXT ranges from roughy $175 per tire up to $350 per tire depending on the size. Retailers may sell for less.

Mastercraft Courser CXT Warranty

There is no milage warranty on the Courser CXT tire. It does, however, come with a 45-day satisfaction guarantee.

Mastercraft’s standard limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. Tires found to be defective in the first 2/32-inch tread wear will be replaced free of charge. After that point and down to the final 2/32-inch of tread life, Mastercraft will replace the tires on a pro-rated basis.

Who Makes the Mastercraft Courser CXT Tire?

All Mastercraft tires are made by Ohio-based Cooper Tires.

Is the Mastercraft Courser CXT Good in Snow?

Due to its aggressive tread pattern and plenty of void space, the Mastercraft Courser CXT has some capability in fresh powder, as it can churn up and toss away snow quite easily. It’s not great for prolonged use, however, as the tread compound isn’t designed for colder temperatures and will soon freeze up and provide little grip, especially on frozen roads. The tire can, however, be studded to provide capable winter grip.
