The Best Off-Road Tires for Daily Driving

The Best Off-Road Tires for Daily Driving

So you need/want some new tires for your truck. You want them to look great and be genuinely off-road capable. But you don’t live in a pickup truck commercial and you (let’s be honest) spend the majority of your time commuting on paved ground. As a result you need a truck tire that’s comfortable on-road, long lasting and quiet. Well, you’ve come to the right place.

We’ve run down a list of the best options for crossover, SUV and truck owners so you can commute in comfort and not have to worry about getting stuck when off the beaten path.

Michelin LTX AT2

All-Terrain tires are means to offer serious off-road capability with on-road refinement. Many deliver at the former, but suffer when it comes to the latter. As you’d expect with a Michelin, that’s not the case here. These are serious off-road tires that still deliver extremely high levels of on-road refinement and driving dynamics.

Continental Terrain Contact AT

Similar to the Michelins above, the Continental Terrain Contact AT gets high marks for its on-road handling and refinement in both the wet and dry, while still offering reasonably high levels of off-road grip. If you’re looking for something even more on-road focused, we’d also suggest the Terrain Contact HT. It moves further towards an on-road focus with better refinement, braking capability and tread life, combined with enough off-road grip for occasional use.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR

This all-terrain tire really does put the focus on street capability. It’s interior tread section is quite densely packed for on-road stability, while you can clearly see the center tread rib that runs the full length of the tire. This gives excellent on-road steering response. If you’re searching for some off-road grip for a luxury SUV and still want your heightened on-road driving dynamics, these Pirellis would be our top pick.

Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

The next-generation of Cooper’s AT3 tire, the 4S is designed with improved off-road performance while maintaining excellent on-road livability.

With a 65,000 mile warranty, they’re incredibly quiet too.

Severe weather rated, they are full four-season tires and come build for winter weather.

Available in 15- to 20-inch sizes from 235 to 285 widths.

Hankook Dynapro AT2

A solid budget option, the Dynapro AT2 RF11 does a lot but doesn’t cost it. This next-generation all-terrain tire has an aggressive tread that offers plenty of grip off road and looks pretty badass too. At the same time, it makes use of a more conventional five-row tread pattern for solid water evacuation and on-road handling in both the dry and wet.

On-road handling is improved thanks to small connector bars between the shoulder tread lugs. These also serve multiple purposes, limiting road noise, while also allowing the tread to flex less under load and, therefore, wear more slowly.

As a result, this tire gets a solid 60,000 mile tread life warranty.

Add onto all this true winter capability and a great price and this is a quality option.

Toyo Open Country A/T II

Toyo’s entry-level off-road tire, the the A/T is a full on-road/off-road tire, designed for capable off-road performance with long tread life and a quiet ride.

All A/T II tires come with a 65,000 mile treadwear warranty.

Perhaps one of the A/T II’s best features is its wide variety of fitment options, with sizes available in 15 through 22-inch diameters in 215 to 325 widths.

UPDATE: Recently Toyo announced the new Open Country AT III which will eventually replace the AT II. It is a far superior off-road tire, though does give up some on-road civility and performance as a result. For more on that tire see here.

Nitto Terra Grappler G2

An extremely functional off-road tire the Terra Grappler G2 is a second-generation all-terrain tire aimed at maintaining and enhancing off-road grip while making big improvements in every day drivability.

The central tread section delivers plenty of grip on rocks and gravel, with lots of biting edges. At the same time the tread blocks are scalloped alternately so as to make for better grip in loose surfaces.

On-road the tread design has been engineered to reduce noise with frequency cancelling optimizations. Plus, the longer lasting tread compound is designed to las for an impressive 65,000 miles – one of the longest you’ll find on any truly off-road-capable all-terrain tire.

Yokohama Geolandar HT

If you need the true off-road capability, theres the Geolandar G015. But Yokohama also sells the Geolandar HT which is a highway terrain tire. This means it meshes the best parts of an all-terrain tire with an all-season tire. As a result you get decent off-road grip (more than you would on an all-season), combined with a quieter ride, more dynamic responsiveness on-road and, generally, longer tread life. The Geolandar HT is guaranteed for 70,000 miles.
