6. Hankook Dynapro AT2

Another well-priced option on this list, the Hankook Dynapro AT2 is also one of the newest.

It’s designed for aggressive all-terrain driving but retains a surprising level of on-road handling dynamics and civility too.

The wild tread design hides the fact that it actually uses a more conventional five-row layout that you’d find on an all-season tire, albeit with some pretty jagged edges. All those angles make for excellent grip off-road.

4. Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

Brand new from the off-road experts at Cooper, the Discoverer AT3 4S is part of an expanded A/T3 lineup. It delivers everything we loved about the AT3, including impressive off-rod grip, as well as a very high level of on-road performance in both wet and dry conditions. Plus, as the 4S indicates, it’s properly suited for snow and wear the three-peak mountain snowflake logo on its sidewall as proof.

Other highlights include on-road driving dynamics and civility. Overall, it’s impressive this tire performs as well as it does off-road, because it looks so much like an on-road-focused tire.

3. Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain Adventure with Kevlar

This tire brings together excellent levels of grip and on-road performance. The void space is significant and delivers lots of grip in lose surfaces.

A lot of the tires on this list have some serious off-road credentials, but that might not be what you’re looking for. In that case, our top pick for a more highway-focused tire is this Michelin.

A much more premium option compared to the General Grabber HTS60 mentioned above, it’s quiet and comfortable and will last a long long time with a 70,000 mile tread life warranty (for most speed ratings). Offering some off-road grip, what really makes this tire stand out is its all-weather capability, with winter traction beyond what you’d normally get in a conventional all-season.

     

1. BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2

It’s little surprise to see the BFGoodrich T/A KO2 at the top of this list.

It’s a stand-out even among this group of impressively-capable off-roaders.

The all-terrain capability is exceeded only by the tire’s true off-road durability – a must if you’re serious about off-roading. The added layer of sidewall protection prevents cuts and slashes, while the tread compound itself is extremely durable.

We even love it’s winter performance! (In the past year years BFGoodrich improved the tire just enough so that it now classifies for the three-peak mountain snowflake designation meaning it’s certified for true winter use).

Simply put, there really isn’t a better option.

So what’s the catch? Well, there are few.

First up, the tread life warranty of 50,000 miles is the lowest in the segment. However, you’ll get to that milestone even with hard driving.

Second, on-road grip in the wet isn’t as good as some other all-terrain tires.
