BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A Review

Editor’s Note: The BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A has been discontinued and replaced with the Trail-Terrain T/A.

The BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A is a unique tire that’s trusted by major automakers to be standard equipment on their trucks.

Both the Ford F-Series and Toyota Tacoma come with these tires from the factory, and for good reason.

PROS

  • More off-road traction than other all-seasons
  • 6 year warranty
  • Solid on-road performance

CONS

  • Limited sizes
  • Passable off-road grip
  • No mileage warranty

These might look like all-terrain tires, but they are technically all-seasons. Sort of.

BFG has managed to produce a very unique tire with the Rugged Trail T/A in that it offers better off-road performance than one would expect. While the tire manufacturer describes it’s capabilities as including “light off-road traction” that’s more than all-seasons offer.

All that said, this is an all-season and it excels in that area. The unique tread pattern brings with it a smooth and comfortable ride as well as impressive and predicable handling and grip – particularly in the dry.

Also impressive is the low noise volume of these tires. Automakers demand this from the factory and so BFG make sure to engineer this tire to be just as quiet as a conventional all-season.

No tread life warranty is provided for these tires, which always raises alarm bells for us, however, users regularly report well above 70,000 miles with some stretching up to and beyond 100,000 miles. Many of these happy owners are owners of 3/4 ton or one-ton trucks who use their machines for towing. So that says a lot for this tire’s ability to endure under hard work.

Who Should Buy the BFGoodrich Rugged Trail TA?

We recommend these tires as a solid replacement option for F-Series or Tacoma owners as well as for other truck owners looking for a quality all-season tire with more off-road grip than you’d expect.

BFGoodrich Rugged Trail TA vs KO2

With the KO2 being such an extreme version of an all-terrain tire, BFGoodrich has decided to offer the Rugged Trail TA as a more on-road focused tire. The tire was originally designed as a more on-road-friendly version of the KO2, made specifically for OEMs to give trucks off-road grip, with a lot more on-road civility.

The more compact tread design means that there’s less void space and, therefore, less grip overall. The tighter mesh of tread blocks also makes for better handling and improved wet-weather performance on-road. It’s also significantly less expensive than the KO2s.

How Many Miles Does the BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A Last?

With no factory warranty provided in terms of mileage life, real world user data suggest you should get roughly 65,000 miles on a set of these tires.
