Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Review

With the increasing number of crossovers on today’s roads, Falken has built an all-terrain tire to meet the needs of a whole new segment of drivers.

PROS

  • Long warranty
  • Durable compound
  • Winter rated
  • Better on-road than you’d expect from an all-terrain tire

CONS

  • Not as off-road capable as some all-terrain tires

Rather than focus on extreme off-rod grip, the Wilpeak AT Trail tire is designed to deliver solid grip in light off-road conditions, combined with better on-road driving manners and an impressively long life.

In many ways the tread design is almost like a conventional all-season, but on steroids. There are still five conventional rows of treads, but the tread blocks themselves are much larger with jagged edges for gripping loose earth, while there’s a decent amount of void space between them, allowing the tire to dig in and toss earth away.

Large exterior tread blocks wrap over on the he shoulder for added levels of grip with some added protection for the sidewall from cuts and scrapes. As mentioned, this tire isn’t built for extreme off-roading and yet Falken still built it to hold up well.

A unique tread compound and plenty of siping in the tire means it’s certified for extreme winter use and wears the three peak mountain snowflake logo on the sidewall.

In short, when it comes to off-road driving this tread design is meant for lighter off-roading, such as dirt trails and gravel roads. And while that may sound soft, it’s built to endure that type of punishment regularly. In fact, Falken is so confident in the tire’s long life that they give it a 65,000 mile tread life warranty. That’s the highest you’ll find on an all-terrain tire currently on sale.

In terms of on-road performance, the Wildpeak AT Trail delivers more dry and wet weather grip than is normal of an all terrain tire thanks to the center tread section that makes it quite stable on the highway and responsive to turn-in. Those larger exterior tread blocks hold up nicely in corners too.

A silica-infused tread compound helps in terms of wet weather grip, keeping the tire pliable in low temperatures and delivering that impressive long life.

Build for crossovers that actually get used off-road on a regular basis, the Wildpeak AT Trail is an innovative new tire and we expect to see other brands follow Falken’s lead here.

Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Price

The Falken Wildpeak AT Trail retails from roughly $100 per tire to approximately $200 per tire. Retailers may sell for less.

Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Warranty

Falken backs the Wildpeak AT Trail with an impressive 65,000 mile tread life warranty. This ties a few other tires as the highest mileage rating for an all-terrain tire.

A standard limited warranty covers a free replacement if the tire suffers a manufacturing or materials-based fault in the first 2/32-inch of tread wear. After that point Falken will replace the tires on a pro-rated basis.

Is the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Good in Snow?

While not a true winter tire, the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail is rated for extreme winter use by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC). As such it receives the three-peak mountain snowflake logo. It doesn’t offer the extreme snow capability or extreme cold temperature flexibility of a winter tire, but thanks to plentiful siping and a unique compound, combined with big tread blocks designed for off-road driving it can handle snow covered roads quite well. For the vast majority of truck or SUV drivers this tire will be sufficient for full year round use.

Is the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail Quiet?

While slightly louder than a conventional all-season tire, the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail is surprisingly quiet for an all-terrain tire. It is designed more for on-road use, so perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

How many ply is the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail?

Like most all-terrain tires, the Wildpeak AT Trail makes use of a 2-ply sidewall, not a 3-ply sidewall is is common on mud-terrain tires. The tire is not available with a 10-ply / Load Range E rating, nor is it available in any LT sizes.
