Falken Wildpeak HT02 Review

Falken Tire is pushing the concept of a highway terrain tire with the Wildpeak HT02, offering more capability and durability for those who use their truck to work hard and play hard.

PROS

  • Longer tread life
  • Excellent wet weather braking
  • Stable and durable for towing

CONS

  • Off-road grip could be a bit better

Somewhat surprisingly, when Falken decided to build more performance into its highway terrain tire, the brand didn’t opt for more all-terrain or off-road grip. In fact, they went the opposite route.

Now that doesn’t mean this tire is “softer.” Far from it. In fact, Falken built the Wildpeak HT02 to offer increased tread life as well as increased durability for what owners of trucks really want. And by that we mean, this tire was built to handle payloads and towing, and is designed for the added torque of 3/4-ton and 1-ton HD pickups.

Look closely at the base of the tread blocks and you’ll see that each one is connected to the next via what Falken calls a “support bridge.” By tying the tread blocks together, it makes the tread more stable, particularly when towing or carrying heavy loads.

The shoulder tread blocks are particularly wide and feature Falken’s 3D canyon sipe technology. This particular design is made to offer wet and light wintry weather grip, while at the same time hold up to the heavy torque loads that an HD truck delivers.

To increase durability further, this tire goes a step beyond most highway terrain tires and includes an added sidewall feature. This isn’t so much for grip as it is designed to deliver an extra layer of sidewall protection for truck owners who do venture off-road or who frequent work sites.

Additional highlights of this tire include a tread design that’s impressively quiet, while Falken claims this tire has best-in-class wet weather braking.

Very reasonably priced, we’re incredibly impressed that Falken can offer all this and a 70,000 mile tread life warranty. If there’s any drawback to this tire it’s that off-road grip isn’t fantastic, but that’s really expected for this category. (If you want better off-road grip, get a set of all-terrain tires).

That said, if you actually use your truck for hauling or towing on a regular basis and put in a lot of highway miles, we highly recommend the Wildpeak HT02.
