Firestone Transforce AT2 Review
Summary
A durable off-road/on-road tire build for commercial vehicles, it’s built tough and can handle a lot of abuse. As a more budget-focused tire it has some drawbacks including a stiffer ride and rides quite loud. It’s more affordable than most. Unfortunately, it shows.
Firestone Transforce AT2 Review
Firestone’s Transforce AT2 represents the brand’s next-generation of commercial truck tire technology, though the tire fails to truly impress.
PROS
- Tough off-road tread compound
- Long life
- Decent all year round
- Attractive price point
CONS
- Stiff ride
- Loud
Making use of a new chip and wear resistant tread compound the tire is built to wear more slowly, no matter if your daily routine includes piling on the highway miles or traversing dirt and gravel. Owners do report around an average of 55,000 miles, though no specific warranty rating is offered.
The tread is deep for maximum off-road traction, though on-road it is louder than many competitors. Large circumferential channels do help evacuate water and prevent hydroplaning. Winter grip is aided by that deep tread and deep siping on the tread blocks. While some all-terrain tires are rated for true winter driving, this tire is not. Still, owners report being impressed with overall capability in colder climates and in snow.
Designed to hold up on big trucks and under heavy loads the tire’s structure is made to last with two high-tensile steel belts reinforced by a nylon ply and coated in a two-ply polyester casing to give it some cushioning. Still, owners report its quite a stiff ride. The bigger complaint is noise though. Tire manufacturers have made great strides in recent years to be able to deliver impressive off-road grip while engineering-out much of the on-road noise an all-terrain tire is known for. These tires just don’t perform as well in this area as rivals.
Overall, the Firestone Transforce AT2 is by no means a bad tire, but there are better alternatives amongst the competitive set. While these tires do have benefits (particularly when it comes to price), we’d recommend checking out the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac for a top-rated commercial all-terrain tire.
