Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT Review

Designed for next-level grip in winter conditions, the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT delivers true performance when you need it most.

PROS

  • Superior grip on ice
  • Excellent snow traction
  • Great for evacuating slush
  • Great dry weather grip too

CONS

  • Some drivers report reduced fuel economy

For starters, the tire features a unique tread compound designed specifically to give better traction on ice-covered roads, delivering grip in the most treacherous conditions.

The WRT in the tire’s name stands for Winter Reactive Technology and is used due to the different features of the tire that are designed to adapt to changing conditions, from cold dry roads, to wet or slushy roads, to snow covered roads.

The directional tread pattern of the tire is an obvious feature designed to channel away water as well as slush. The specific design means its optimized to evacuate high volumes of slush, which can make for slippery and unpredictable driving. Many winter tires that offer high levels of grip on ice or snow tend to be less capable in slushy situations, so we’re particularly impressed at this tire’s capability and how it really does solve for all of winter’s issues.

In the dry, a center rib section that’s mostly solid delivers stable highway driving and more immediate response to cornering. The large shoulder blocks of the tire also help with dry traction and feature Goodyear’s 3D TredLock design that actually joins two smaller tread block sections together under harder cornering, allowing them to act as one larger unit, providing better grip in corners. As a result, this tire doesn’t exhibit some of the ponderous dry-road cornering that many winter tires do.

And while this tire does highlight it’s ice-traction capabilities, it’s still a top performer in the snow. The siping that runs across all the tread blocks helps grip snow and create friction, while two-dimensional blades in the center tread section give additional grip, allowing for better stopping on snow and better acceleration too. Plus, the ultra-wide tread design gives great stability and confidence on snow-covered roads.
