Hankook Ventus ST RH06 Review
An all-season performance tire made specifically for trucks and SUVs, the Hankook Ventus ST adds driving engagement without adding a lot of cost.
PROS
- Impressive dry grip
- Holds up to abuse
- Great price
CONS
- OK wet weather grip
- Not really designed for winter driving
Making use of a v-shaped tread design the Ventus ST puts a lot of rubber on the ground for optimal grip. The feature also allows for responsiveness to changes in direction, as well as the ability to grip in corners under the sort of heavy loads you’ll get in a truck or SUV. The ultra-wide shoulder tread sections distribute the vehicle’s weight across a very wide section of rubber.
Overall dry weather handling with these tires is excellent.
The V-pattern is also able to still deliver impressive water-clearing, though some owners do complain that in heavier rains they aren’t quite capable enough.
Technically these are all seasons and while Hankook does claim they can handle some light snow, that really isn’t the case. We don’t recommend anyone run all-seasons in the winter if you live somewhere with snow, and we strongly recommend you don’t run these in snow.
In terms of tread life, Hankook claims 50,000 miles for a set and by almost all accounts owners are pleased with the results, even from self-proclaimed spirited drivers who generally abuse tires. This is due, in part, to engineering in the tire that helps it to better distribute forces more evenly across the tread, preventing premature wear.
Plus, beneath the surface there’s a tire structure made of twin steel belts coated in two plies of spiraled nylon, which not only help to give the tire excellent highway stability, but work to create a structure that’s designed for the heavy loads of a truck.
Performance aside, these tires are lauded for their low noise levels, especially compared to other tires in this class. Owners generally report being surprised at the lack of noise when swapping from another brand. Hankook does make use of a unique Dual Depth Pitch Theory (DDPT) to help cancel out tire noise and it must work.
As a final aesthetic point, in addition to the great look of these tires, they are built with a rim protector, with the sidewall jutting out from the rim to protect against scratches. Hankook is aware of the pride in their vehicle an owner who would opt for tires like these would have, so it’s nice to have a little extra protection for your wheels.
The tire also comes in some larger applications wth numerous 22-inch sizes, a hint at Hankook’s desire to be a part of plus-sized aftermarket applications.
While Hankook is generally known as more of a budget brand many of its tires punch above their weight and that’s certainly true here. The Ventus ST delivers impressive high-performance and long life at an attractive price point.
