Michelin Latitude Sport 3 Review

An ultra high-performance tire for ultra high-performance SUVs and crossovers, the Michelin Latitude Sport 3 is trusted by brands like BMW and Porsche to be factory equipment on several of their models.

PROS

  • Superior summer grip
  • Excellent wet grip

CONS

  • They don’t last long, but that is expected

That should really be all you need to hear.

The fact is, this tire is a true performance-focused summer tire that’s also designed for maximum wet-weather performance, making it perfect for utility vehicles.

An ultra-grippy tread compound makes for truly amazing dry weather performance, helping you get the most out of the handling capabilities of your SUV. With a UTQG rating of 220 (lower means more grip) this is some seriously grippy rubber. The down-side, of course, being that the lower the rating the sooner the tires can wear out. Michelin does back these tires with a tread life guarantee (see below) but you’re likely to be replacing them every two years.

That, it seems, is the cost of high performance.

With four wide circumferential grooves to evacuate water and prevent hydroplaning, the tread compound is also designed to grip on wet roads. Likewise, there’s more space than normal for a UHP tire, between the tread blocks, helping add more ability to disperse water and lots of gripping edges.

Making use of the latest low-rolling resistance technology, Michelin designed the Latitude Sport 3 with variable thickness sipes which are designed to prevent tread block deformation. As a result, the tire is optimized to improve fuel economy and, as a part of Michelin’s Total Performance program, will maintain that capability even as the tire wears.

Priced on the higher side (though really not all that bad for what you get here) the Latitude Sport 3 is an ideal fitment for luxury crossovers and SUVs to maximize their performance while offering optimal safety in inclement weather.
