Nexen Roadian AT Pro RA8 Review

One of the more affordable all-terrain tires on the market, does the Nexen Roadian AT Pro RA8 performs on- and off-road deliver budget grip to match its budget price?

Pros

  • Decent capability in modest off-roading
  • Fantastic warranty
  • Bargain price
  • Winter performance

Cons

  • Could use more outright off-road capability
  • A touch louder than several competitors

To a certain extent, the Roadian AT Pro RA8 is less capable than many in the segment, but don’t discount it based just on that.

Still decently capable off-road it offers more grip than the majority of drivers will ever need. On rocks, hard packed dirt and gravel it grips quite easily. It even features a specific zig-zag siping pattern to grip in mud. Those same sipes act to help prevent rocks from getting stuck in the tread. Always an issue with all-terrain tires, getting rocks stuck in the tread can lead to uneven and premature tread wear.

On-road it offers a reasonably quiet and comfortable ride with good highway riding dynamics and solid cornering characteristics as well.

The same sipes we discussed earlier, also work to help dissipate heat on-road, enabling the tire to last a long time. In fact, Nexen backs the Roadian AT Pro RA8 with a modest 50,000 mile warranty.

Siping also plays a key role (in combination with the tread compound) in making this a winter capable tire, as it comes certified with the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association’s (USTMA) Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol.

Overall, we certainly don’t love the Roadian AT Pro RA8, but you can also do a lot worse. It offers modest off-road capability, above average on-road characteristics and combined with its price, warranty (see below) and winter capability, it’s a compelling offering in the segment.
