Continental CrossContact LX20 Review

NOTE: The CrossContact LX20 has been discontinued and replaced with the CrossContact LX 25.  Read that review here.

Designed for trucks, crossovers and SUVs, the Continental CrossContact LX20 is for those who prioritize long tire life over performance. That’s not to say the tire doesn’t deliver solid traction, but it’s primary focus is on saving you money, both at the pump and by buying tires less often.

PROS

  • Long life
  • Impressive fuel economy
  • Decent on-road performance
  • Quiet ride

CONS

  • Treadwear warranty could be longer

FEATURES

The CrossContact LX20 makes use of what Continental calls its EcoPlus Technology, which is built into the tread’s design to deliver numerous benefits. Chief among those is treadwear, meaning these tires are guaranteed to last 70,000 miles – so expect even more.

In addition, both a quiet ride and a overall fuel economy are top reasons to buy this tire.

Impressively, the LX20 boasts strong wet weather traction (particularly when it comes to braking) and even some snow capability. The tire also features Continental’s Traction Groove Technology which allows to grab and hold snow, which helps the tire grip against snowy surfaces. This is done through complex siping that runs across the tread blocks.

It is not, however, a certified winter tire, but an all-season tire with a Mud + Snow rating, so if you do see plenty of snow and freezing temperatures where you live, we recommend a set of winter tires as well.

Despite it’s long-mileage claims, complaints of the tire wearing out early are more common than we’d like to see. However, the tire does come highly recommended by owners. On the Discount Tire website, out of 56 user reviews, 96.4 percent recommend this tire.

Continental CrossContact LX20 Warranty

The CrossContact LX20 comes with a 70,000 mile limited treadwear warranty. While impressive, it’s about 10,000 miles short of the warranty from the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus.

However, these Contis come with the brand’s Total Confidence Plan which includes flat tire roadside assistance that will change your tire and install a spare, or give you a tow for up to 150 miles. If your tire is destroyed due to a road hazard in the first 12 months, Continental will replace it free of charge. And if you’re not happy with your tires after the first 60 days of ownership, you can return them for a refund.

What is Continental EcoPlus Technology?

Continental has increasingly been designed and manufacturing tires with low rolling resistance, to help improve the fuel economy of your vehicle and reduce CO2 emissions. The latter is done not just by reducing the fuel your vehicle uses, but by reducing how often you need to replace tires.

Conti’s EcoPlus Technology uses Tg-F Polymers and Silane additives mixed with the natural rubbers and other compounds to make a tire that not only creates less unwanted friction with the ground, but also improves overall tread life.
