Continental ProContact TX Review

Available for utility vehicles, coupes and sedans, the Continental ProContact TX tire offers extremely high levels of refinement and is ideally suited to either premium vehicles, or other vehicles where you’re looking to improve ride quality and lower road noise.

PROS

  • Quiet, luxurious ride
  • Fuel efficient
  • Real world tire life better than what is claimed

CONS

  • Tread life (on paper) could be a bit longer
  • Unusually high number of complaints about pothole damage

A factory option on numerous vehicles, the ProContact TX is an all-season tire with heightened levels of refinement.

The tread design is incredibly quiet while certain versions of the tire come with Continental’s ContiSilent Technology. This includes an extra layer of sound-absorbing foam in the tire casing, just below the tread, so absorb road noise.

It also just looks like a true premium tire, with an intricate tread design and handsome sidewalls.

Designed for more of a serene ride than performance, it’s handling capabilities are better than expected and this tire is quite nimble. Wet weather handling is good, although some users complain that in deep water its hydroplaning resistance could use some improvement.

A silica-infused tread compound is used to achieve wet weather grip while not impacting fuel economy. In fact, owners do report these tires are noticeably more fuel efficient than some more performance focused options (as they should be).

Winter performance is passable, though we always recommend a set of true winter tires if you live somewhere with snow.

As for tread life, it varies depending on the specific tire and ranges from 40,000 to 60,000 miles, though most are in the 60,000 range. That’s lower than some similar tires like the Continental CrossContact LX 25 tire, which we also suggest you check out. This tire is a factory fitment on a few models, including the Subaru Impreza, and owners often report tread life that exceeds what Continental suggests.

If there’s any hesitation in recommending this tire, we’ve noticed an unusually high number of complaints amongst owners regarding damaged tires due to potholes. This could just be coincidental, but the repeated complaints are worth noting.

Overall, this tire delivers in all areas it promises. Compared to a similar option like the CrossContact LX 25 it does come with a slightly reduced tread life and a bit less all-season grip, but trades it for a quieter and more fuel efficient ride. Depending on your priorities, the choice is up to you.
