Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Review

Extreme capability mixed with equal amounts of durability, the Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX is designed to take you anywhere and not leave you stranded. At the same time, it’s designed for some on-road capability too.

PROS

  • Extreme off-road capability
  • True off-road durability
  • Surprising on-road manners

CONS

  • Limited snow traction

In that respect, think of the ST MAXX as a mixture of an all-terrain tire with a mud-terrain tire, combined with highway manners. Some might think of this as a highway terrain tire, but it’s much more extreme than that.

Starting with the tread, there’s plenty of void space between the big (though not enormous) tread blocks. This helps the tire dig into soft earth and toss it away. Stone ejector ribs can also be found between the exterior tread blocks to help prevent stones from sticking to the tire and leading to reduced grip and premature treadwear.

The interior tread blocks of this tire are particularly unique as they feature a hybrid design that alternates between two tread rows and three tread rows. With plenty of void space, this helps with off-road traction, while the more densely packed three-tread rows help reduce highway noise, give better on-road stability, and even prevent uneven tire wear. In short, it’s really this unique design feature that makes these tires so much more liveable.

Closer inspection of the tread also reveals its studdable, which can be ideal if that’s what you’re looking for.

Moving to the sidewall, the tire also features design elements here to help give traction in loose earth or mud.

So capability it has, but what about durability? This is where Cooper’s Armor-Tek3 technology comes into play. This 3-ply carcass helps make the tire stronger and resist cuts, chips and slashes. It also allows the tire to be aired down and back up again without sustaining any damage.

Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Price

Pricing for the Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX ranges from just under $200 per tire for a 15-inch tire to roughly $400 for a 20-inch tire.

Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Warranty

As an extreme off-road tire it’s not surprising that Cooper does not offer a mileage guarantee on this tire.

It is covered by Cooper’s standard limited warranty that covers defects that may arise in manufacturing or as a result of the materials. Tires found to be defective in the first 2/32-inch of treadwear will be replaced free of charge, after which Cooper will replace them on a pro-rated basis down to the last 2/32-inch of tread. Proof of purchase is required.

Cooper also offers a 45 day road test warranty, so if you’re not completely satisfied in that time they will replace the tires with a comparable set free of charge.

How long do Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX last?

You should expect to get anywhere from 30,000 miles to around 45,000 miles on a set of Discoverer ST MAXX tires. As an extreme off-road tire Cooper doesn’t offer any mileage guarantee and so tread life depends heavily on how hard you run them.

Are Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX good in snow?

While the same technology that’s ideal for scooping away mud does have some benefits in deep snow, the Discoverer ST MAXX has limited siping and its tread compound isn’t designed to handle colder temperatures. Winter tires use siping to actually grab the snow so it sticks to the tire, using it as a friction point against the snow on the road. Without these features grip is limited. The ST MAXX is, however studdable.

What ply are Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX?

The Discoverer ST MAXX makes use of a 3-ply sidewall construction for extreme off-roading. It not only protects against side punctures but allows the tire to be aired down and aired back up without any long term effects to he sidewall.
