Dunlop Grandtrek PT3A Review

A sporty all-season tire built for a big truck, theĀ Dunlop Grandtrek PT3A delivers on its promise, for a price.

PROS

  • Luxury ride
  • Reasonably sporty
  • Impressive all-weather capability

CONS

  • Extremely expensive

Factory equipment on the Lexus LX SUV, it should come as little surprise that these tires offer excellent refinement with low noise (or none at all) and an extremely comfortable ride. In fact, a quick check of user reviews online shows zero complaints in this area, which is what you’d expect for a factory-equipped Lexus tire.

The rather conventional tread design features a single center tread rib for maximum highway stability and good turn-in response. Exterior shoulder blocks are all connected on the inside of the tire, reinforcing the structure. This not only allows for better handling characteristics but prevents against uneven wear.

Speaking of wear, there’s no specific rating on the tires but expect roughly 40,000 to 50,000 miles on a set. It’s important to point out that these are tires built for a heavy truck and the internal structure is designed for just such a purpose.

The critical issue with these tires is the price. They are large, perform very well and are available in an incredibly unique size. As a result they’re exceedingly expensive at around $450 a tire. And that makes them hard to recommend no matter how good they are.

If you’re hunting for alternatives, it can be tough due to the LX’s unique size. The Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza Plus is a fantastic option generally, though the tires are only available in a slightly lower profile setting which is likely to diminish ride quality a bit. Your best bet for an exact fitment is the Yokohama Geolandar HT G056. It’s not as refined, or as sporty, but it’s impressive in poor weather, will last significantly longer and costs about $200 less per corner.
