General Altimax RT45 Review

The successor to the Altimax RT43, General Tire has just introduced the Altimax RT45, maintaining the best features of the original, while adding more tread life and a few handy features.

PROS

  • Wet performance
  • Long tread life
  • Quiet, comfortable ride
  • Absolutely massive selection of sizes
  • Fantastic value

CONS

  • Not as engaging to drive as some competitors

As a grand touring tire, the RT45 is built to high standards, delivering all-season traction, improved comfort as well as heightened driving dynamics.

The tire it replaces was perhaps best known for impressive grip in the wet, and that trait has been maintained, with a high silica tread compound, numerous water evacuation channels and loads of grippy tread edges.

Using a new computer-optimized tread compound, the folks at General were able to design a tread that’s low on noise, despite how busy it looks.

Winter grip, always a feature of any all-season, is decent, though still limited.

Along with maintaining the best features of the RT43, the new RT45 gains a 10 percent improvement in tread life. Both H and V speed rated tires get a decent 65,000 mile warranty (70,000 seems to be the new norm amongst tier-one brands) while T speed rated versions are designed for 75,000 miles.

Beyond these attributes this tire includes two unique features designed to make maintaining your tires easier. First, it comes with alignment wear indicators on the tread. These small blocks wear down over time and are an easy way to check if your car is out of alignment – a critical error that can wear tires prematurely.

The second feature is a simple Replacement Tire Monitor (RTM) built into the center rib, Once it’s worn down to the 2/32-inch mark, it will reveal the wording  “REPLACE TIRE.” You know what to do then!

The Altimax RT45 might not deliver quite the driving dynamics of some Grand Touring tires but it is incredibly quiet, comfortable and long lasting while still being a more affordable alternative. Plus, you won’t have a hard time finding one for your vehicle.

At launch General Tire has 100 different sizes with 36 more sizes coming soon.
