Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady Review

Giving all-season tires the meaning they are supposed to have, Goodyear has developed the Assurance WeatherReady that’s designed to actually perform in all-seasons.

PROS

  • Severe winter rated
  • Great warranty
  • Actually delivers on its promise of being a true all-year tire

CONS

  • Slightly louder than a conventional all-season

Often referred to as four-season tires, the most notable feature of this tire is the three peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall indicating that it’s tire certified for true winter driving. With plenty of siping to grip the snow and provide traction, it’s also made of a custom tread compound using soybean oil that’s designed to resist freezing, so you still have grip when the temperature plummets.

Beyond that, the design is asymmetric and is designed with many features of a premium all-season touring tire in mind. The singular center tread section gives highway stability and immediate response, while larger shoulder tread blocks give confidence in the corners. Another particularly unique feature of this tire is its responsive design with tread blocks that have teeth on the inside of them. They’re normally separated with space between to give extra biting edges, however, when under harder cornering in summer conditions, the forces on the tire cause them to move together and create a single larger tread block, making for a tire that delivers both great winter grip and great summer grip/handling.

Goodyear has also outfitted this tire with with it calls Evolving Traction Grooves. Naturally these deep channels that run the length of the tire will wear down over time limiting their ability to disperse water. As a result, Goodyear engineered these to open up and become wider as the tire wears, allowing it to retain its intended water-evacuating properties.

And on top of all this, the tread wear warranty is a healthy 60,000 miles which again is better than most four-season tires promise.

If there’s any complaint here it’s that the tire is a bit louder than a conventional all-season.

As a result of all this, you end up with a tire that delivers as you might expect. That doesn’t sound like a compliment, but it is, as many four-season tires are a little disappointing at delivering both sufficient summer and winter grip. Not here.

Are Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady tires good?

With the Assurance WeatherReady Goodyear has engineered an exceptional all-season tire that really can be used in all seasons. And, unlike some past winter-certified all-season tires we’ve used they’re not terrible in the summer. Far from it. This really is an impressive engineering package. Unfortunately all that technology does cost more.

Is the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady Noisy?

Due to its unique design that’s capable of handling winter weather, the Assurance WeatherReady is slightly louder than a conventional all-season our touring tire. It’s by no means noisy, however, and we’d still recommend it for almost any vehicle.

Is the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady A Winter Tire?

Yes and no. Although this tire is rated for extreme winter weather and features the three-peak mountain snowflake logo on its sidewall, it’s not what we would call a true winter tire. That logo does mean it has passed certification to offer enough grip to safely get you through winter, however, it does only mean that it achieved a certain minimum level.
