Mastercraft Courser AXT2 Review

No one wants to over-spend, regardless of your budget, and so it’s always important to consider tires from brands like Mastercraft. But are these value-focused tires worth saving a few bucks over? Let’s find out.

PROS

  • Price
  • Overall value
  • Solid off-road capability

CONS

  • Lacking in winter capability
  • Not always the cheaper option, depending on size
  • Tread life

The Courser AXT2 is Mastercraft’s second generation all-terrain tire. Mastercraft, it should be pointed out, is the value division of Cooper Tire, so this isn’t some garbage brand or a company that will disappear after you buy your tires.

The AXT2 has a mildly aggressive tread design marked by larger exterior tread blocks while the interior three rows of tread blocks are staggered to give the appearance of one larger mesh. This helps gives some on-road stability, although the lack of a true center rib means they are a little soft in terms of overall on-road responsiveness – something to be expected on an all-terrain tire.

A tougher tread compound is used to hold up against the abuse of off-road driving, while this particular tire also features an extra layer of rubber at the base of the tread to protect it against drilling from smaller rocks, or cuts from any sharp rocks you may drive over.

There’s moderate siping on the tread blocks, but this is not a winter rated tire. For that, look to Mastercraft’s premium sibling, the Cooper AT3 4S.

Off-road grip is decent. You won’t be blown away by it’s capability, but that’s not really the point. Instead, it offers mid-range grip for a price thats quite low – although depending on the specific size the Courser AXT2 isn’t as cheap as you might expect so be sure to price your truck’s size with a few other brands.

For a more budget-focused tire the warranty is solid at 55,000 miles.

Overall we like this tire’s quiet on-road ride and manners, mixed with its decent off-road grip for the price.

Mastercraft Courser AXT2 Price

Pricing for the Courser AXT2 ranges from around $125 per tire to roughly $350 per tire. We suggest you price your specific set against a set of comparable Coopers, like the Discoverer AT3 4S and check available discounts to make sure you’re getting the best price.

Is the Mastercraft Courser AXT2 Good in Snow?

We rate this tire about average when it comes to winter grip, meaning that in the real world it’s quite limited. You’ll get essentially the same level of traction as you would against a budget all-season tire. If you are looking for an all-terrain option with true winter capability, we recommend the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S.
