Mastercraft Courser HSX Tour Review

A touring tire built specifically for the needs of modern SUVs and crossovers, the Mastercraft Courser HSX Tour delivers a premium ride at a more affordable price.

PROS

  • Great price
  • Well-rounded all-season performance
  • Quality ride and low noise

CONS

  • Could be a bit quieter
  • Mileage warranty is just ok (though good for the price)

Using the five-row tread pattern of a conventional all-season tire, the Courser HSX Tour has a unique center rib design. Typically this part of the tire is a single uninterrupted piece of rubber for maximum highway stability and responsive steering. Here, the team at Mastercraft has engineered the tread row in sections to favor all-weather grip and give the tire a slight edge should you use if off-road at all. And at the same time, if you look closely, each tread block features a small nub on the end, deeper in the tread groove. This feature allows the treads to lean on each other in heavy braking or acceleration to still give it a more solid feel in more demanding driving conditions.

As a result, the tire’s added capability in inclement weather doesn’t impact its ability to deliver driving dynamics. This isn’t an overly sporty tire though, so don’t expect too much from it. We’d describe handling as adequate and definitely sufficient for most drivers.

Four wide channels run the length of the tire to evacuate water effectively and reduce the chance of hydroplaning. in addition, each tread block features plenty of siping to grip in the wet and mild winter weather too.

For added summer performance, Mastercraft engineered a new sidewall construction that’s designed to maintain its shape better under harder cornering, to give you better stability in a high-riding crossover or SUV.

Built to perform as a premium option, it’s also designed to look like one, using ventless molds in the manufacturing process that results in a more polished look. Even the sidewall design has some handsome elements.

The 60,000 mile warranty isn’t amazing, but when you consider the affordable price, it’s hard to hold that against the tire.

Overall, it’s an attractive option from a more budget-focused brand. And if your concern is the performance and reliability of a budget brand, know that Mastercraft tires is a sub-brand of Cooper Tires, one of the leading tire manufacturers in America.
