Mastercraft LSR Grand Touring Review

An all-season tire designed for long tread life, solid performance and a luxurious ride, the Mastercraft LSR Grand Touring is the perfect example of a premium tire from a non-premium brand.

PROS

  • Excellent tread life
  • Premium drive
  • Excellent price point

CONS

  • Could use a bit more dry weather grip

The Mastercraft line is a sub-brand of Cooper tires and usually focused on more affordable tire options, with the LSR Grand Touring, the brand is taking a swing at the premium side of the market with impressive results.

Perhaps it sounds a bit odd to say, but for starters the tire just looks like a premium model, with a stylish tread design and sidewall.

The tread pattern is asymmetrical, with different features for the inside of the tire versus the outside. Starting in the center, there’s a closely packed row of tread blocks that work to give the tire stability and responsiveness. For maximum performance you’d like to see a completely solid row here, so this won’t deliver quite the immediacy of turn-in as some tires.

The slits in the center tread do, however, line up with the tread rows on either side to help push water away, while larger circumferential grooves before the tire’s shoulders help evacuate the water and minimize the chance of hydroplaning.

Overall the interior tread blocks feature larger water evacuation capabilities to help this all-season tire perform admirably in the wet, while the larger tread blocks on the outside shoulder aid in dry weather handling.

The tread design has been engineered for a larger footprint and for more even wear over time. Combined with the tread compound, this allows the tire to wear at a lower rate and for Mastercraft to back it with a tread wear warranty of up to 80,000 miles (see below for more details).

With solid overall performance, the Mastercraft LSR Grand Touring really delivers on it’s premium ride characteristics of being comfortable and quiet, while adding long tread life at a very reasonable price. Overall, it’s a surprisingly good tire for what you pay. Sometimes doing your research and not just paying for “name brand” tires really pays off!
