Nexen Roadian HTX2 Review

A next-generation highway terrain tire, the Nexen Roadian HTX2 delivers more miles for the same great value. Plus, it comes with one stand-out feature.

PROS

  • Lengthy tread life
  • Impressive warranty features
  • True winter performance
  • Solid wet weather grip

CONS

  • Passable handling dynamics (as expected)

Highway terrain tires are some of the most misunderstood tires on the market. The reality is they are built to deliver some mild (and occasional) off-road performance, but mostly they’re designed for highway mileage and comfort.

In a sense they fall half-way between an all-terrain and an all-season, though again they’re decidedly more focused on comfort and tread life, without any real driving enjoyment to speak of.

With this as the main criteria, the Roadian HTX2 checks all the right boxes, and some.

It’s quiet and extremely comfortable. Handling dynamics are lacklustre, but that’s expected in this category. Wet grip is quite good thanks to numerous biting edges, evacuation channels and large circumferential grooves. Plus, tread life is right on the money.

With a 70,000 mile expected tire life, it’s a 5,000 mile bump over the outgoing HTX RH5. Some premium tires have now started to go beyond the 70,000 mile mark, but not many, and those that do cost a bundle. (Not here).

Of note, LT sizes get a 50,000 mile warranty, up 10,000 miles from the old version of this tire.

What this tire has that really separates it from the rest is the fact that it features the three peak mountain snowflake (3PMS) logo on its sidewalls. This certifies that it’s built for true winter performance.

That’s not to say it’s a winter tire, but it meats the minimum threshold for winter grip, meaning it will out-perform standard all-season tires handily – but won’t quite live up to a true winter tire.

Numerous manufacturers have started offering 3PMS certified all-terrain tires over the past five years, but this might just be a true segment first in the highway terrain segment.

On top of all this, Nexen continues to offer plenty of value, coming in at significantly less than tier one brands.

An ideal tire for larger SUVs looking for a smooth ride, long life and good value, this winter traction feature makes the Roadian HTX2 even more compelling.
