Pirelli Scorpion STR Review

Pirelli is one of very few brands to offer an all-season tire for trucks and SUVs that is also designed for light off-road use.

PROS

  • Extremely well-rounded
  • Decent warranty

CONS

  • Limited sizes

While many all-seasons can be used for light off-roading on vehicles with a four-wheel drive system, Pirelli doesn’t shy away from encouraging owners to leave the beaten path with this tire and get off road. In fact, it’s made to meed the demands of vehicle manufacturer’s like BMW, where it can be found as a factory-equipped tire on some of that brand’s SUVs.

Giving this tire its on-road performance is an uninterrupted center rib for an excellent highway stability and immediate turn-in response. Large shoulder blocks on the outside then help turn that lateral force into grip and hold up well when pushed.

Four circumferential grooves work to evacuate water from the tread surface and prevent hydroplaning As is common with Pirelli tires you’ll notice that the grooves closer to the center are larger to handle more of that work, while the outside ones are a bit smaller, allowing for more of the external tread area to make contact with the road for superior dry weather grip.

A silica-infused tread compound makes this tire quite versatile in offering wet weather grip while retaining it’s grip in the dry.

Where this tire’s off-road capability is evident are in the two rows of slanted tread blocks next to the center rib. These extra edges help to grip loose surfaces while plenty of extra siping helps give the tire a slight improvement in winter grip.

Overall, this tire is a extremely well-rounded. It’s a touch pricey (it is a Pirelli after all) and comes with a decent 65,000 mile tread life warranty. It’s grip in any one of the different conditions it’s designed to be used for isn’t anything to brag about. That said, we like it’s well-rounded versatility but feel like if you don’t need off-road grip, just go with a conventional all-season like the Cinturato P7 All Season Plus and if you do need regular off-road capability, then look to a highway terrain or all-terrain tire.
