Toyo Extensa A/S Review

If you’re hunting for a value tire but don’t want to trust some brand you’ve never heard of, the Toyo Extensa A/S might just be the perfect option for you.

PROS

  • Great price
  • Value for your money
  • Wet weather grip above expectations
  • Very quiet
  • Very long lasting tread

CONS

  • Lacking in on-center sporty feel

An affordable and well-rounded all-season tire, the Extensa isn’t outrageously good in any one area. That might not sound like a glowing review, but it’s also not bad in any one area either.

A middle-of-the-road tire for all-seasons, with modest grip and decent stopping capability, the Extensa represents impressive value.

As with most all-season tires, the Extensa AS features a typical tread pattern of five basic rows of tread blocks and four circumferential grooves, which are designed to evacuate water quickly and prevent hydroplaning. The tread pattern features decent amounts of siping across the tread blocks, which gives additional wet weather grip and even a touch of winter grip – better than we expected in fact.

The tire’s center rib is not a solid piece of rubber but is divided into sections. On the plus side this gives even more wet-weather grip. On the down-side, it does reduce on-center feel on the highway – detracting somewhat from the tire’s overall performance.

The shoulder tread pattern is actually continuous, with deep sections cut into it to evacuate water. This overall continuity does help give the tire an edge in dry wether performance and makes it a predictable handling tire, with a more robust sidewall that can withstand serious cornering forces.

Toyo designed the tread pattern to limit noise, and this certainly is a very quiet operating tire.

Depending on the tire you select, there are different speed ratings and different mileage guarantees with them, ranging from 50,000 miles on the low end to 65,000 miles on the high end. Regardless, users generally report milage well beyond, in some cases close to double, the mileage guarantee. That alone should give you a reason to put this tire near the top of your shopping list.

Surprisingly, on Toyo’s own site the tire’s rating from owners isn’t great at just 67%, but retail sites like Discount Tire give it a 4.6 out of 5 with a 100 percent recommendation rating from those owers.
