Toyo Open Country HT II Review

The Open Country H/T II is Toyo‘s newest iteration of its street-focused highway terrain tire, promising upgrades over the original. So does it deliver?

PROS

  • Wet weather performance
  • Long life/warranty
  • Wide selection of sizes

CONS

  • Mediocre off-road performance

As an HT or Highway Terrain tire, this version of the Open Country is, in theory, designed to bring together the best features of an all-terrain tire and an all season. Based on the real demands of customers, however, it tends to be more street focused with minimal off-road capability.

In short, it’s not really an off-roading tire, and can’t hold a candle to the grip provided by other all terrain tires (like Toyo’s own Open Country A/T III) but it will certainly out-perform any all season.

Where the Open Country HT II improves upon the original is in tire life and wet weather performance.

A new tread compound helps deliver and milage guarantee and allows you to push beyond it for thousands of miles with confidence.

As for wet grip, the tire includes obvious features like two exterior circumferential grooves to evacuate water. And if you look closely you’ll notice the tread pattern also includes two more circumferential grooves (zig zag ones) that serve the same purpose.

But the real highlight of this new tire is a patented tread design with shoulder grooves that expand as the tire wears. As a result, as the tread compound loses some of its early wet weather grip, the tread pattern compensates for it by opening up larger grooves. As a result, the Open Country HT II sees its most signifiant performance improvements in the wet.

As an added feature to help sway tire shoppers, the Open Country HT II comes with a different look on each side of the tire, with classic (nearly invisible) branding on one side, while the other comes with a sporty look where the tire logo stands out from the tire in a dark black. Or, you can also select a white outlined design, for that classic truck look.

Overall, this tire is more all-season than all-terrain. So if you’re looking for some light off-road capability but primarily drive on-road and need a long lasting, smooth and quiet tire for the job, the Open Country HT II is an excellent pick.
