Trust the off-road experts at Mickey Thompson to build a tire to fill a niche where others might not even bother.

PROS

  • 3-ply sidewall
  • mileage guarantee

CONS

  • Not as capable as a true mud-terrain

The Baja ATZ P3 is a unique type of hybrid tire, combining the best features of an all-terrain tire with the capability of a mud-terrain tire, delivering amazing grip in low-traction situations while not giving up all of the attractiveness of an all-terrain tire.

And by that we don’t mean it’s an unattractive tire. Far from it. This is  beefy-looking off-road tire from it’s aggressive sidewalls to its serious four row tread lug design.

A conventional design for mud-terrain tire, the four row setup does mean there’s some compromise in terms of on-road driving dynamics, but anyone buying a tire like this knows what they are getting into and are happy to swap out some on-road sophistication for off-road grip.

It shines in the mud and loose-earth with big tread lugs and plenty of void space to dig in and toss anything aside. The exterior shoulder tread lugs feature unique divots to help add another layer of grip while, like mud-terrain tires, the sidewall is also designed with traction-enhancing features for maximum grip.

Still, it doesn’t deliver to the same level as a true MT tire (like the Baja MTZ P3) due to the fact that the tread lugs aren’t as big and the void space isn’t significant.

And as you’d expect on an MT tire, it comes with a 3-ply sidewall to not only resist cuts, but to also retain its shape and longevity when aired down.

Now all that sounds a lot like a conventional mud-terrain tire, so what makes this a hybrid you ask? Good question. For starters that’s a silica-infused tread compound designed to improve wet-weather grip on the road.

It’s also a durable compound and as a result, Mickey Thompson backs this tire with  tread life guarantee, which is definitely not something you ever see on mud-terrain tires.

As for the shorter tread lugs mentioned above, a positive benefit is that the tread has less flex in it and is both more stable on the freeway as well as more responsive when cornering on road.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Discount Tire, the Baja ATZ P3 comes recommended by 97.9% of owners.
