Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3 Review

Amazing mud-terrain capability from a brand that’s known for building amazing off-road tires.

PROS

  • World-class grip
  • 3-ply sidewall

CONS

  • Could be quieter

The Baja MTZ P3 is Mickey Thompson’s “standard” mud-terrain tire. That might sound a bit strange for most brands, but Mickey Thompson is so specialized when it comes to off-road tires that it offers numerous different types of mud-terrain options.

Using a four-row tread section, the Baja MTZ P3 features a tighter packed center tread section and more spread-out exterior shoulder tread blocks. This helps give the tire a touch-more on-road stability than you’d expect, while the tread lugs are still plenty huge to dig into the earth, sand or mud. There’s no shortage of void space either, specially on the outside edges of the tire, so as to scoop that loose earth or mud out of the way and keep you moving forward.

The shoulder tread blocks are in an alternating patter to vary the tire’s grip and capability, while each lug is slightly curved to dig into the ground and help the tire self-clean so it’s ready and available to grip the next pass around.

Of note, there are also numerous stone ejectors to keep the tread clean of buildup.

As you’d expect, the tire features a 3-ply sidewall for maximum protection from cuts and scrapes out on the trail. Theres also a unique sidewall design that gives even more protection, while also adding an extra level of traction when you’re in deep.

With some on-road civility and capability still taken into account, Mickey Thompson uses a silica-reinforced tread compound to help deliver better wet-weather grip than you’d expect.

As a sign of just how impressive these tires are, real owners posting on Discount Tire are unanimous in giving this tire a 100% recommendation rating. There’s not much more you can say than that.
