Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT Review

An all-year-round, all-terrain tire, the Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT delivers civility and off-road grip but has some drawbacks.

PROS

  • Quiet and comfortable on-road
  • Capable off-road grip
  • True winter traction

CONS

  • Shorter tread life warranty
  • Wet grip ranks below rivals

An impressively capable all-terrain tire, it offers an excellent balance of void space for churning into loose earth with plenty of sturdy, angular tread lugs to offer grip on rocks. Both the design of the tread blocks as well as the shape of them has been computer optimized to deliver maximum cut and chip resistance – helping prolong tire life under even extreme wear conditions.

We will add that overall tread life on these tires isn’t the longest. They offer some of the fewest miles for all-terrain tires on the market – although they will do so under very hard use.

Shoulder tread lugs offer an added layer of sidewall protection, running down the side of the tire and working to prevent slashes.

Deep channels between the lugs help force water outward, while circumferential grooves do their part to maintain maximum grip in the wet and prevent hydroplaning.

A real benefit of these tires is their three-peak mountain snowflake certification, meaning they are suitable for true winter use and will offer grip and confidence. Surprisingly, despite this winter traction, wet weather grip is not great and generally ranks below segment competitors like the Cooper.Discoverer Rugged Trek. Another tire to consider is the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, which is designed specifically as an all-terrain tire with heightened wet-weather traction.

And while we’re offering alternatives, two of the smartest choices are the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S, which sacrifices some off-road grip for big increases in on-road traction and tread life. Or, go with the Toyo Open Country AT III which isn’t fantastic in the wet, but is an off-road beast.

Overall, these are impressively capable off-road, while on-road traction is much better than you’d expect. Still, with limited tread life and lacking wet traction, there are better options for your money.
